Using colour theory to prepare my colour palette

Writer's picture: Sarah RitchieSarah Ritchie

How I use colour theory when producing my needle-felted fibre paintings.

Here's a sneaky peak into my latest work-in-progress. 🌻

I've just finished layer one of these sunflowers, where I block out what I think the colours will likely be. I’m not too worried about accuracy of colour at this stage.

Then I carefully select the colour palette for layers two and three, which you can see around the outside of the work. Mostly I go by gut feel based on colours and colour combinations that I love, but that gut feel is also based on solid colour theory.

You’ll notice, in a number of my artworks, that I stay within an analogous palette – working a lot within a palette of blues to greens to yellows – my favourite colours. I also love working with the complementary colour combo of blues and oranges.

Since I’ve been concentrating on developing a range of needle-felting fibre painting kits, I haven’t done any art for myself in quite a while. I’m eager to see how this one turns out! Stay tuned…🌻
