Speakers’ Corner – treasuring our freedom of speech

Hey Aucklanders, did you know that our city has a ‘Speakers’ Corner’? I didn’t, until a recent stroll through Albert Park revealed this charming slice of our history.

A Speakers’ Corner is a public space where people can stand and share their thoughts, debate ideas, and exercise their right to free speech. Back in the day, before the internet connected us with the world, this was how people voiced their opinions. Imagine standing there, addressing a live audience of curious, engaged listeners — boldly sharing your views.

It got me thinking about what this little spot represents. Freedom of speech. The freedom to express your ideas. The freedom to be heard. These are pillars of a democratic society, and yet they’re often things we might take for granted.

Today, we’ve swapped the soapbox for social media platforms and blogs, broadcasting our thoughts to audiences much larger than any physical crowd. While the tools have changed, the importance of having a voice hasn’t.

One of the reasons I make a point to vote in our general elections is because I value living in a democracy where we can have a say. A democracy where the right to be heard is protected, and where diverse voices matter.

Walking past that Speakers’ Corner reminded me of how precious these freedoms are and how important it is to protect and celebrate them. So, the next time you’re in Albert Park, take a moment to pause by that little piece of Auckland history and reflect on how far we’ve come.
