Campina de Cima rock salt mine art exhibition

If you think that showing your work in traditional art galleries (bound by traditional art ecosystem rules) is your only option, think again!

In 17 February 2024 the Campina de Cima rock salt mine, underneath the city of Loulé in Portugal, took on a new role as an art exhibition space.

Artists from the Portuguese David Melgueiro Association launched their ‘Ocean: Sea is Life’ exhibition, with a focus on ocean clean-ups. The mine held its first art exhibition in 2022, featuring the works of German painter, Klaus Zylla.

Reading about this innovative exhibition space got me thinking. In the ever-evolving art world, the traditional gallery space is not the only platform for artists to showcase their creativity. Many talented individuals find themselves overlooked by conventional galleries for various reasons, prompting them to seek alternative exhibition spaces.

By venturing beyond traditional gallery spaces, artists can forge unique connections with their audiences and redefine the boundaries of artistic expression. Whether it’s a cozy cafe or the rugged depths of an underground mine, the possibilities for non-traditional art exhibition locations are limitless, providing artists with the freedom to showcase their work in unconventional and imaginative ways.
