I did my first-ever “wildlife photography” today – that is if you don't count Monty, my muse.
I was in the garden, photographing Monty, when I heard rustling in the leaves. Soon enough I saw a 'lizard' scurrying across our path. I waited, and watched at least 10 of these little critters moving around and basking in the sun. As long as I didn't move, they seemed to go about their business quite happily.
I now know that these 'lizards' to be ‘skinks’. Rudimentary Googling told me they are Rainbow Skinks (Lampropholis delicata) – the colours on some of them were amazing! They were introduced from eastern Australia in the 1960s and are considered to be a pest and a threat to our native Copper Skink. I have to say, they are very cute pests.
I must have been out there for at least half an hour, just watching. It was actually a wonderful experience – very 'mindful' and peaceful. If my butt hadn't been so sore sitting on a really small flowerpot, then I might have stayed longer. Next time, I’ll use a cushion and try to get a bit closer.
