Pat Benatar and the power of conviction

Old cassette tape with “80s anthems” written on it. Life lessons from a Pat Benatar 80s classic.

Here's a fun fact: The first female artist to perform on MTV when it launched on 1 August 1981 was Pat Benatar. Her music video for You Better Run was the second video ever played on the channel, following Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles.

Pat Benatar’s music still regularly makes its way into my favourite playlists. The other day, I was listening to Invincible (1985), a song I’ve heard countless times, but this time, one lyric hit differently: “With the power of conviction, there is no sacrifice.” Wow.

A while back, I wrote about how people often comment on how much I achieve and ask, “Where do you find the time?” The truth is, I prioritise what aligns with my purpose over activities others might commonly engage in (like watching TV).

That lyric sums it up perfectly – when you have a deep conviction about something, giving your time, energy, and resources to it doesn’t feel like a sacrifice. It’s not about giving something up; it’s about investing in what truly matters. It adds to life rather than taking away from it.

So, what about you? What do you believe in so strongly that dedicating yourself to it feels effortless? If you’re not sure, maybe it’s time to explore what truly drives you – your purpose, your passion, your why. Because when you find it, you won’t feel like you’re sacrificing anything – you’ll simply be living life fully.
