Gold to silver: Breaking limiting mindsets

Sarah Ritchie gold to silver - breaking limiting mindsets

In a society where youth and vitality are often prized above all else, discovering the first signs of ageing can trigger a complex mix of emotions. For me, it was the realisation, at 35, that my once-golden locks were beginning to turn silver. Uncertainty crept in as I questioned whether the world would accept this new version of myself. To cling to my youthfulness, I embarked on a rigorous hair-dyeing routine that would span the next 15 years.

Over those years, I poured approximately NZ$30,000 into preserving my golden hue despite its toll on my health. As someone with sensitivities to chemicals and fragrances, each trip to the salon risked triggering debilitating migraines, yet I persisted.

However, upon reaching the big 5-0, I decided to liberate myself from the shackles of hair dye, embracing my natural silver hair with a newfound sense of freedom. I discovered a sense of authenticity and self-acceptance in relinquishing the need to conform to society’s beauty standards.

Reflecting on this journey inspires me to pose some questions: What limitations are you imposing upon your life or creative endeavours? Are there decisions made in the past that no longer align with your present values and aspirations? Our reasons for action can evolve, rendering once-valid choices obsolete. To live authentically, we must continuously reassess our motivations and challenge the constraints we place upon ourselves.

In embracing change and relinquishing outdated mindsets, we open ourselves to new opportunities for growth. Just as my transition from gold to silver hair symbolised a journey of self-discovery and acceptance, we can all break free from the confines of limiting beliefs, paving the way for a more enriching and fulfilling existence.

Artists often face pressures to conform to established norms and standards within their respective fields. Pursuing recognition and success can sometimes lead creatives down paths that stifle their authentic voice and creativity.

By embracing the idea of ‘gold to silver’, artists can liberate themselves from the constraints of conventional thinking and external validation. Much like shedding the façade of dyed hair, releasing outdated beliefs and limiting mindsets allows artists to tap into their true essence and unlock their unique creative potential.

Freed from the burden of conformity, artists and creators can explore new avenues of expression, experiment with unconventional techniques, and infuse their work with genuine emotion and depth. By honouring their true selves in their artistic endeavours, they cultivate deeper connections with their audience and create work that resonates profoundly.

The journey from gold to silver in one’s art practice represents a transformative shift towards authenticity, self-expression, and creative freedom. It invites artists to break free from limiting mindsets, embrace change, and embark on a journey of self-discovery and artistic evolution.
