Caution: Wet Paint

Caution Wet Paint sign

For years, I had a health and safety-style "CAUTION: WET PAINT" sign hanging over my studio bench. It wasn't there as a warning; it was more of a personal challenge, a reminder to always be in motion, always creating. That sign became a symbol for me—a declaration that my work is never static, always evolving, always something on the go.

As artists, it's easy to fall into the trap of perfectionism or complacency. We might hesitate to start a new project or finish an old one because it doesn’t feel quite right. But the "Wet Paint" sign is a nudge to keep going, to embrace the process, the mess, and the uncertainty that comes with creating.

When you see a "Caution: Wet Paint" sign, it means that something is in progress, unfinished, and still drying. It's alive with possibility. I believe we should all metaphorically hang this sign in our studios or minds.

So, the next time you’re feeling stuck or uncertain, think about that sign. It’s a little nudge to remind you that your work doesn’t have to be perfect; it just has to be in progress. Keep moving ahead, keep creating, and let the paint stay wet.
