For artists and creators, the journey is as important as the destination. Many of us face the subtle yet formidable challenge of negative mindsets that can hinder that journey and stifle our creativity. Challenging and conquering these negative beliefs is vital for creating a thriving art practice.
Negative mindsets and self-beliefs often stem from a fear of failure or inadequacy. By challenging these thoughts, you open yourself up to growth and learning, bold experimentation, a greater level of authenticity with your audience, a higher level of resilience, and an understanding that mistakes are merely stepping stones toward your ultimate goal.
So, how can you combat negative mindsets? I want to challenge you to think about the opposite of whatever negativity enters your mind. For example, many years ago, my husband – Simon – would pull me up whenever I said, “I can’t”. He would say, “Don’t say “I can’t”, say “How can I?” I’ve never forgotten that, and this simple caution has made a radical difference in how I approach seemingly impossible situations.
Here is a list of typical negative statements that an artist or creator might make and a suggestion on how you might positively rephrase the statement. Do any of these statements resonate with you? The next time you catch yourself making a negative statement or self-declaration, stop and think about the opposite statement and try that on for size instead!
