As artists, our work is shaped by more than just the techniques we learn or the materials we use. Our past – every comment, memory, success, and stumble – finds its way into our creative lives. But it isn’t only in the messages or symbols we consciously choose to share in our art; it’s also in how we approach our art or creative practice.
Do you find yourself second-guessing? Do voices from your past, either uplifting or critical, still echo as you create? Has your upbringing influenced your confidence, your view on money, or even how you price your work? These threads from your past are woven deeply into the way you create today.
For this month’s challenge, take time to reflect on how your past is present in your creative process and the business of being an artist. Consider the impact of your mindset, your opinions, and any blockages you may still hold. Ask yourself: Are there beliefs about myself that are no longer helpful? Are there values I’ve inherited that I want to keep, reshape, or let go of? Write down a few of these reflections. Then, choose one past influence that you think may be holding you back. How can you start shifting it?
The challenge: For the next two weeks, work on actively noticing this past influence each time you sit down to create or work on your art practice. When it surfaces, acknowledge it, and try to take a small step toward rethinking or releasing it. This could mean adjusting your inner dialogue, setting boundaries with your work, or even incorporating a new, symbolic element into your next piece that represents the mindset you’re moving toward.
By consciously confronting the impact of your past, you can begin to clear the way for an art practice that feels more fully, authentically your own.
