I recently saw a billboard that caught my attention. It boldly stated, “Of course Woop (a meal ingredients delivery company) costs a little more. Your time is valuable.” Woop took one of the reasons people don’t want to buy from them and flipped it around. They told us that quality and convenience come at a price because they save us valuable time.
Like Woop, potential art buyers may say that our work is “too expensive.” How do you combat that? Let’s draw inspiration from that billboard as we consider this month’s challenge.
Your challenge
Take a moment to reflect on your artistic journey. Consider the years of practice, the unique skills you’ve honed, and the creativity you pour into every piece. Your art is not just a product; it’s a culmination of your dedication, talent, and passion. Your art may be highly unique, rare, emotive, or nostalgic.
Now, think about how you can communicate this value to your audience. Craft a statement or a story that explains why you’ve priced your art the way it is. You are not apologising for the price, just reminding people why they should seriously consider your work and part with their hard-earned money! Here are some points to consider:
Time and effort: Explain the time and effort of creating each piece. Just like the convenience of a meal delivery service, your art saves your audience the time and effort of creating something beautiful themselves.
Skill and expertise: Highlight the knowledge and skills you’ve developed. Your art reflects a level of mastery that can’t be easily replicated.
Uniqueness: Emphasise the uniqueness of your work. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind creation that offers something unique and personal to its owner.
Emotional value: Art can evoke emotions and create meaningful experiences. Share the story of the work (the inspiration), or stories or testimonials that illustrate the emotional impact of your work.
Share Your Story
Post your statement or story on your profile or social media, and use the hashtag #ValueOfArt. Let that inspire your audience to see your work for what it truly is: a valuable investment in creativity.
Remember, just as Woop justifies its cost by valuing people’s time, we can justify the price of our art by valuing our creativity and dedication. Let’s proudly stand by the worth of our creations!
