Meet Diana Nyad. A 64 year old American endurance swimmer who – today – became the first person to swim the 177km distance from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage.
What makes this woman extra-remarkable is not that she is the first at something, but that this was Diana’s 5th attempt. She made her first attempt 36 years ago, then three further attempts in 2011 and 2012.
Here are the three messages Diana gave to the crowd when she emerged, exhausted, from the water at the end of her 53 hour swim:
We should never, ever give up.
You never are too old to chase your dreams.
It looks like a solitary sport, but it’s a team.
In an ABC interview (YouTube clip, above) Diana said:
“My resolve on this thing was deep. I just had this attitude of, it doesn’t matter what it is, find a way…The people, you could see, were hungry for that life message of never, ever give up.”
Brava, Diana. You are an inspiration.
