kowhai flowers

My mother used to call the Kowhai tree “dripping gold”. Certainly the flowers themselves, and the golden carpet that the flowers make when they fall to the ground, are magnificent.

Widely regarded as New Zealand’s national flower, this gorgeous native is in bloom, right now (mid-spring), with what always feels like a too-short display.

The Kowhai is a favourite with the tui birds and a favourite with me!
