Jason Travis: may we see the contents of your bag please?…

Jason Travis "Persona" series of photographs

I have jokingly referred to a woman’s handbag as being like a Tardis (for all you Dr Who fans). The contents of a handbag (or manbag) is usually something one guards ferociously and remains for the owners eyes only….until now.

Jason Travis has unzipped the lid on the sacred and the secret, combining a little bit of looking at what we shouldn’t with a whole lot of skill.

The result? A photographic project titled “Persona” (2007+). Jason’s Flickr homepage shows a montage of the diptychs that make up the series. The top half contains a portrait of the bag owner and the bottom half shows the content of the bag itself, meticulously arranged then photographed on a complimentary background.

Persona is a fascinating journey into personality and creativity. The old adage that “the content of your bag says a lot about you” has now been cleverly and artistically captured on film (or on pixels as the case may be). Makes me wonder what the contents of my handbag would say about me…!
