Not being a mixed media or collage artist myself I am not usually on the hunt for “useful” items to use in my paintings. However, the eyes of my creative person have been opened to the possibilites which lie (sometimes literally) all around us. Though I am not keen to repeat the mixed media attempt that was Canvas #18, I am not anti the possibility of using the odd “extra” in a future painting!

When I was a child I eagerly looked forward to Easter. This was the time that I could collect the shiny, brightly coloured foil from the outside of the eggs. I remember begging people not to tear the foil as they unwrapped their chocolate delights. At that time I was more interested about what was on the outside of the egg, rather than the inside (oh, how times changed!).

Cate Prato, the Online Editor of Cloth Paper Scissors Today wrote a recent newsletter article about foraging for different types of paper to use in mixed media or collage projects. Here are 20 paper sources from Cate’s list. I am sure that you could think of more. Go on!

  • Candy wrappers
  • Coffee filters (used and new)
  • Confetti
  • Pamphlets
  • Sandpaper
  • Teabag paper
  • Tickets (movie, plane, etc.)
  • Foreign language papers
  • Ledger pages
  • Receipts
  • Maps
  • Mulberry paper
  • Napkins
  • Newspaper
  • Old drawings and paintings
  • Old notes/letters
  • Origami papers
  • Directions
  • Doilies
  • Envelopes

And here are some courtesy of me:

  • wrapping paper
  • packaging paper
  • photographs
  • photocopies
  • sheet music
  • old greeting cards
  • money (yeah, right)
  • letterbox circulars
  • old stamps
  • brochures
  • phone books
