Here’s a fabulous art website – a joint initiative between the BBC, the Public Catalogue Foundation and various collection curators across the UK.
The ideas is to photograph, catalogue and upload the estimated 200,000 (mostly) oil paintings in the UK’s national collection. Phew! What a task! There are already 63,000 paintings online for you to view, search, tag and enjoy. Completion date for the upload will be at least the end of 2012.
“The collection includes works by some of the greatest painters of the last 700 years, as well as paintings by thousands of lesser known artists. It offers a remarkable insight into the history, landscape and culture of the United Kingdom.”
This is a magnificent work in progress, expecially for those of us who cannot make it to England to wander through the galleries. Cheers BBC!
