I admit, I have a soft spot for animated children’s movies. I have a special soft spot for children’s movies that have incredibly beautiful, wonderfully animated scenes like the one above.

This scene is from the recent Disney movie Tangled (a very modern interpretation of the Rapunzel story). The song – sung by the lead actors Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi (from Chuck) is really lovely, but the lanterns – oh wow – are so delightful. Animation continues to move ahead in bounds…just watch and then compare back to Aladdin nearly 20 years ago!

The storyline goes that Rapunzel (the now 18 year old girl in the boat) was really a princess who had been stolen as a baby, then locked away in a tall tower never allowed to venture outside. Every year, on her birthday, the King and Queen would send a lighted lantern up into the sky in commemoration of their daughter, and in the hope that she would one day see the light and come home. Eventually, the townsfolk joined in the tradition and the result is in the scene, above. Enjoy (and BTW, the rest of the movie is quite delightful too!).
