the (inner) beauty of a geode…

If the average person stubbed their foot on the spherical rock to the left of the picture, they might pause, think about the state of their foot, then walk on. Not the geologist or rock hound, for their eye is keen and their knowledge forces them to look at that drab, pitted, cold exterior and wonder what lies beneath…

The picture, above, is of a geode that I bought for my mother around 20 years ago. I do not know the country of origin of this amazing rock, nor do I know its exact composition – other than it is lined with light purple amethyst crystals.

I have kept it all these years, not only because of its unusual beauty and sparkle, but because of its life lesson. The cliches of “don’t judge a book by it’s cover“, “The Ugly Duckling” and “beauty is more than skin deep” all come to mind, and this wonder of nature proves them all to be 100% true!

…for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (The Bible, 1 Samuel 16:6-8)
