The latest billboard for Bicardi reads: “Cut yourself some slack, and some limes“. I may not be a fan of Bicardi, but I AM a fan of sending yourself the right messages, and “cutting yourself some slack” would be right up there.
We can be hard task-masters on ourselves sometimes. Whether that stems from a drive for perfection or a low self-esteem (or both), the internal pressure we apply can sometimes be more fierce than what the world might throw our way.
When I began the Canvassing My Friends project, I knew the first person I would need to please was myself. Once I began to appreciate that none of my paintings would be “perfect”; none would look precisely as I had envisaged; and that “art” was always going to be subjective, I began to relax and enjoy the process.
I encourage you to find a way to wriggle comfortably into your skin. When you do, your work will reflect your ease and you’ll find that you “ship” your projects more often and with more confidence.
