the koru collage…

Koru CollageI wish you could see this art piece, up close, as I did! I love it when you see an artwork (of whatever medium) and it simply DEMANDS that you take a second (or third) lingering look.

I am sharing this photo, today, for two reasons. The first is the fascinating nature of the piece itself. The second is that its owner – one of the fondly-termed “outlaws” of Simon’s family (that is, “married in”, rather than blood-related) – passed away this week. It is a fitting time to celebrate the life of this man and his (and his wife’s) eclectic art collection.

The collage was created by J. Napper (NZ). The shape is a Maori “koru” design (based on the curling of a silver fern frond). The assemblage of found objects is as diverse as a domino, a peg and a souvenir teaspoon, all set on a resin-like base.

It is a fun, colourful, interesting piece from the home of a gentle, intelligent and soft-spoken man, who will be greatly missed.
