chutzpah at a funeral…

Red hair at a funeralYesterday we attended the funeral of a close family friend. At 78 years old, our friend had lived a full life and the funeral proved a fitting send-off for such a well-loved lady.

As is the norm, the mood was sombre and respectful. I, too, was enveloped in the atmosphere until I got tapped on the shoulder by a little ray of sunshine.

Standing before me was another 70+ year old family friend – only I had to do a double take before I recognised who it was. This effervescent lady had recently dyed her usual blondish-grey locks red. Not just brown with burgundy highlights, I mean RED red!

I think that is the first time that I have seen a woman of her age pile on the chutzpah in that particular manner – and get away with it. I told her that the one thing that made me really smile – that day – was her hair! She grinned.

Chutzpah” (among other definitions) has come to “express admiration for non-conformist but gutsy audacity“. Yep. We saw chutzpah by the truck-load today!
