Simon doesn’t much like being surprised. I found that out the hard way (before we were married) when I took him to a local airfield and sent him up – in the air – on a birthday glider flight (he enjoyed it once he got over the initial panic!).
One surprise he DID like (fortunately) was a special ride in a hot air balloon.
For those of you who have never experienced ballooning, it is not cheap, but is worth every cent. It is SO peaceful, smooth and effortless…a thrill that dosn’t rely on adrenalin.
Once a year, hot air ballooning enthusiasts gather in Hamilton, New Zealand for Balloons Over Waikato, a 5-day event that covers the sky with a blaze of colour. One hot air balloon alone looks fabulous, but the scale of beauty of these multi-coloured monoliths – en masse – is a sight to behold.
Perhaps the thought of ballooning takes us back to a more simple time – in an age of romanticism, exploration and discovery. If you can afford it, and can muster the courage, I urge you to treat yourself to a 19th Century dose of unparalleled grandeur. You will never forget the experience!
