Acrylic on canvas, 30.5 cm x 30.5 cm (12″ x 12″)
DEDICATION: For Stephen Hay. Kiwi abroad. Musician. Loved by God.
I would not – normally – explain one of my paintings, but this one is somewhat different and deserves some commentary. This canvas was painted “for” Stephen, as well as being inspired “by” Stephen, so the symbolism in this canvas is more personal to the recipient.
This canvas was a testing ground for me. It was the first time that I have tried painting a person. I figured if I could paint a sparrow, I could paint a human…but it’s a lot harder than I thought! It was the first time I have tried a monochrome painting, and the first time trying out the Golden Artist Colors Fiber Paste (for the base of the portrait).
The portrait is of Stephen himself. The words are the beautiful lyrics from the New Zealand national anthem (in English). The Maori version is written along the outside edges (in conjunction with the translation of the Maori lyrics). The New Zealand national anthem is a unique national prayer.
Stephen…this is a gift for you, for a Kiwi far from home.
