I would have to say I am feeling quite amazed at the moment…very pleasantly amazed.
When I began this project I made the decision not to explain the meanings behind my paintings (at least not publicly). This resolution was made for a two important reasons. Firstly it was to protect the trust relationship that I have with my inspiree – that I will not expose that which I know of someone for my own gain. Secondly I wanted the viewer to read into the painting what they wished.
Every time I finish a painting, I upload a scan of it to a peer review website paintingsilove.com. I have received two comments – over the last day, from people I do not know – about Canvas #4: Hope Riseth, which I find very encouraging:
“Yes this does portray hope, and the risen Christ to me, I am not usually a fan of abstract because I am too dense to understand them, but I really feel that I understand and see the deeper meaning in this study. Anne”
“Nice colours and the path of hope through Christ. Well done Sarah”
The amazing thing – to me – is that I did not set out (nor complete) this work with the intention of pointing the viewer toward a Christ-centred theme. Looking objectively at the piece, I can see how folks could interpret the painting that way, and that is just awesome.
Part of my challenge-to-self is to create pieces that inspire viewers to reach into the painting and pull out meaning. It appears I am on my way…in generally the right direction!
