I can – now – quite confidently say that I know very little about the world of art!
Our group of friends decided to take part in a “Pub Quiz night with an arts twist”. It turned out it was more like an “Arts Quiz night in a bowling club”. Our team won the prize for the best name (“Basil’s Brushes”…courtesy of Simon’s wit), and the prize for coming last out of 12 teams. In fact, in one section (“name the artists responsible for 10 notable Auckland sculptures, as pictured”) we handed in a blank sheet to be marked. The woman came back to us to ask if we meant to hand in a blank sheet…I just laughed! I think one required a Masters Degree in art history to have a show of correctly answering more than two questions in any section.
Sigh. I realise that I paint, but I do not live art. I know what I like to look at, but I do not understand the art world at all. I have read many books on famous painters, but have absorbed very little detail. Does that mean I cannot be an artist? No. It just means I will NEVER attend a “Pub Quiz night with an arts twist” ever again!
