inspired to imitate…

This week I was talking with a professional contemporary dancer and former member of “Black Grace”. I asked him what kind of dance he enjoyed watching. He replied any dance which inspires him to dance like the person he is watching. He said that all dancers should aim to inspire their audience to want to dance.

Does that comment translate into the world of art? Should artists aim to bring their viewers to the point where they are so inspired they wish to start creating? For me, if I can produce a piece of art that inspires, then I will consider that a great achievement and it is an admirable goal to set myself as an artist.
